Mary Helen Johnson Doss went to be with her Lord on September 27, 2024. She was born into a farming family in Webster County, MS on June 17, 1932. She obtained diplomas from Mathiston High School, and Wood Junior College, before graduating from Mississippi State College for Women in the mid- 1950's. She entered the professional world as a schoolteacher, before beginning her career with the Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service. As an Extension Agent she served at the county level and on the state staff as a specialist at Mississippi State College. After marrying the love of her life, Roy Doss, she moved to Tishomingo County, MS where Roy was employed as an Extension Agent. Helen quickly resumed her teaching career in Tishomingo County. In the mid 1960's she, Roy, and Derrell, her only child, moved to Aberdeen, MS. She continued her career as a teacher in the Aberdeen Municipal School Distinct, teaching the 5th grade for many years, before retiring in 1990. Helen was active in St. Mark United Methodist Church as a pianist, Sunday School teacher, choir member and serving on committees. She loved to entertain church and family members in her home, garden, cook, travel, fish, and was the official "watcher" in the boat as others water skied. She spent many happy hours engaging in the lives of her grandchildren and many others in the community.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, September 30, 2024 at Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Aberdeen with Bro. Kenneth Corley officiating. Burial will follow in the Macedonia Cemetery in Chickasaw County.
She is survived by her son Derrell (Katrina), Oxford; her granddaughters Katy Margaret Doss, Abi-Leigh Doss Dear (Jackson); her brother Van Johnson ( Becky), Eupora; nieces Janet Gammill Bates (Don) Randi Jernigan (Bubba) Rebecca Feather ( Randle); and a nephew Jimmy Gammill ( Regina) .
She was predeceased by her husband, Roy Doss, her parents Pearl and Walter Johnson and her siblings: Mavis Johnson, Thomas Johnson (Ann), Haywood Johnson, Hazel Johnson Gammill and her husband Jim.
Pallbearers will be David Lofton, Daniel Lofton, Steve Gaskin, Bubba Jernigan, Jimmy Gammill, and David Hodges.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the service time at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to St. Mark United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, MS or the Alzheimer’s Association.
