Mrs. Doris Lancaster Sloan, 94, of Tupelo, MS left this present world for her journey to her heavenly home on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 with her family surrounded around her.
She was born July 12, 1930 in Hamilton, MS to the late Troy Allen Lancaster and Maggie Easter Lancaster.
Doris graduated Hamilton High School and attended both Mississippi School and College for Women (now MUW) and Itawamba Community Junior College (now ICC). She married the late John Russell Sloan on August 29, 1953. He preceded her in death after losing a battle with cancer in May 1973 at the age of 43.
She was employed as a book keeper in January of 1949 for the Mississippi Mutual Burial Insurance Company and worked full-time for them for 41 years. Doris continued to work part time for 24 years for a total of 65 years.
She moved to Tupelo in 1990 to be near her 2 sons and their families. She loved her family beyond words and graciously sacrificed to see that her grandchildren and great grandchildren were loved and cared for.
Doris was a member of West Jackson Street Baptist Church in Tupelo and actively served on the food service staff and committee for many years.
Doris is survived by her two sons, Russell Sloan and wife Ann of Saltillo, MS and Ronald Sloan and his wife Carol of Vernon, AL. Grandchildren, John Sloan, Lauren Sloan, Stephen Sloan and wife Savannah of Vernon, AL and Leah Sloan Channell and husband Chris of Northport, AL. Great grandchildren, Addie Sloan, John Adyen Sloan, Lucy Kate McNeel, Beau Allen Sloan, Aaron James Channell and Adelyn Paige Channell. Two sisters, Colleen Williams of Aberdeen, MS and Shirley Reese of Hamilton, MS. Also numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Doris is preceded in death by a grandson, William Russell Sloan; sister Emma Lois Lancaster; brothers in law Norman Reese and Gene Williams.
A graveside service for Doris will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Aberdeen with Rev. Chris O'Daniel officiating. Pallbearers will be Kenny Tisdale, Scotty Allen, Stephen Sloan, Robert Williams, Chris Channell, Brad Brasfield and Phil Thornton.
Visitation will be held prior to the service on Sunday from 1 PM until the service hour at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to The Baptist Children's Village , PO Box 27 Clinton, MS 39060-0027.
