Delma Lee Whitworth Yates, 89, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at NMMC- Gilmore in Amory. She was born in Monroe County to the late Raymond and Hattie Cantrell Whitworth. Delma grew up in Aberdeen and was a graduate of Aberdeen High School. She would go on to earn her LPN License. Delma moved to Illinois in the early 50's with her husband, Calvin Barnes. She lived in Illinois for nearly 35 years where she worked at Victory Hospital in Waukegan. After moving back to Monroe County, she retired from Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory. Delma loved her career as a nurse and took pride in caring for others when they were sick. While in IL, Delma married William Yates. Delma loved people and enjoyed working as an Election Day Poll Worker during elections and helping facilitate all of the Modern Woodmen gatherings. She also had a kind and generous heart and would open her home to her children and grandchildren's many friends and treated them as if they were her own family. She dearly loved her family, cooking for her family and watching all of the Charlie Brown Holiday Specials on TV surrounded by her family. Delma also enjoyed listening to Conway Twitty and Elvis. She attended Friendship Baptist Church.
Delma is survived by her children, Rhonda Barnes, Bristol, WI and Wade Barnes (Joanne), Hamilton; sister, Dorothy Mayben, Hamilton; grandchildren, Waylon Barnes (Amanda), Kenny Barnes, Jessica Patterson (Van), Joshua Pye (Kristen), Jacob Pye (Jenny), Megan Halvorson (Scott), Robert Barnes (Amber), Steven Barnes (Marrisa) and Melissa Barnes; 20 great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews and her partner in crime, as Delma would often say, Judy Gibbs.
In addition to her parents and husband, Bill Yates, she is preceded in death by a son, Dennis Barnes; siblings, Jim Whitworth, Hank Whitworth, Emma Jane Jackson, Bessie Barnes, Lottie Jackson and Ethel Lavander.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM on Friday, October 4, 2024 at Tisdale Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Aberdeen with Bro. Robert Fowlkes officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Waylon Barnes, Kenny Barnes, Robert Barnes, Steven Barnes, Joshua Pye and Jacob Pye. Honorary pallbearers will be Jay Barnes and Randy Lavender.
Visitation will be prior to the service on Friday from noon until 2 PM.
